- ROAS
- 3.00x (300%)
- revenue ÷ spend
- CPA
- $25.00
- spend ÷ conversions
- AOV
- $75.00
- revenue ÷ conversions
- Break-even ROAS
- 2.50x
- 1 ÷ margin
- Break-even CPA
- $30.00
- AOV × margin
- Profit after ads
- $200.00
- revenue × margin − spend
Your ROAS of 3.00x is above your break-even ROAS of 2.50x, so these ads are profitable before fixed costs.
How to use it
- Enter your ad spend and the revenue those ads drove (or leave revenue empty and enter AOV).
- Enter conversions (orders) to get CPA and AOV.
- Enter your gross margin: what's left of revenue after product cost, shipping and payment fees, before ad spend.
- Compare your ROAS with the break-even ROAS. Above it, the ads pay for themselves; below it, each sale loses money.
The formulas
| Metric | Formula | Example ($1,000 spend, $3,000 revenue, 40 orders, 40% margin) |
|---|---|---|
| ROAS | Revenue ÷ ad spend | 3,000 ÷ 1,000 = 3.00x |
| CPA | Ad spend ÷ conversions | 1,000 ÷ 40 = $25.00 |
| AOV | Revenue ÷ conversions | 3,000 ÷ 40 = $75.00 |
| Break-even ROAS | 1 ÷ gross margin | 1 ÷ 0.40 = 2.50x |
| Break-even CPA | AOV × gross margin | 75 × 0.40 = $30.00 |
| Profit after ads | Revenue × margin − ad spend | 3,000 × 0.40 − 1,000 = $200 |
Profit after ads is contribution profit: it ignores fixed costs like salaries, software and rent. Platform-reported revenue is often over-attributed, so compare it with your store or analytics data.
FAQ
How do you calculate ROAS?
ROAS = revenue from ads ÷ ad spend. $5,000 in revenue from $1,000 of spend is a ROAS of 5 (often written 5x or 500%).
What is break-even ROAS?
Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ gross margin. At a 40% margin you need a ROAS of 2.5 to cover product costs and ad spend. Below that, each sale loses money before fixed costs.
How do you calculate CPA?
CPA = ad spend ÷ conversions. Break-even CPA = average order value × gross margin, which is the most you can pay for a sale without losing money on it.
What is a good ROAS?
There's no universal number. A ROAS is good when it's above your break-even ROAS, so it depends on your margin. A 30%-margin store needs about 3.33 just to break even, a 70%-margin product only about 1.43.
Is ROAS the same as ROI?
No. ROAS uses revenue and only ad spend. ROI uses profit and all costs. This calculator also shows contribution profit after product cost and ad spend, which is closer to ROI.
